A People’s Shame, A Nation’s Scourge: 3801 Lancaster

Baby_Feet_1809101bAs the trial for Dr. Kermit Gosnell progresses and Americans find out more and more about what occurred at 3801 Lancaster, the address of Gosnell’s murderous operation, our nation is gripped by the reality that hundreds of innocent lives were snuffed out by this evil man.

Just what was the motivation for these deaths:  Profit and greed.

And what was the reason for these deaths:  A people who have lost their compassion for the “least of these” and a nation which has banished morality from its conscience.

As I’ve read about the history of the Gosnell tragedy, one fact that surfaced again and again is how disengaged and removed people were from the obvious reality of what was occurring at 3801 Lancaster.  From politicians to state agencies, from hospitals to healthcare professionals, and from employees in Gosnell’s death mill to neighbors in the immediate vicinity, nearly everyone turned a deaf ear, looked the other way, or refused to step forward to intervene and put a stop to the murderous enterprise that continued for three decades.

3801 Lancaster became just another address to thousands of people.  And in so doing, 3801 Lancaster ultimately became the Shame of these people.

While it’s easy to single out Gosnell for his murderous deeds, what millions of Americans are less willing to admit is that killing a child by snipping his spinal cord after that child survives a botched abortion is no different, in the eyes of God, than taking the life of a child while that innocent baby is being nurtured in the safety of his mother’s womb.  Both end life… violently and prematurely.

As I was reading God’s Word this morning, I was reminded of how God views each of us, while we were yet unborn.  Psalm 139 states:

“For You created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.  I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made… My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.  Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”

As the Psalmist demonstrates, God not only created each of us, but He likewise created each child that has ever been killed through the tragedy of abortion.

What no doubt grieves God is the tolerance and acceptance we as a people have demonstrated towards the taking of a life He has purposely created.  Since our nation officially endorsed and sanctioned the act of abortion via Roe vs. Wade, more than 55 millions lives have been snuffed out and their “ordained days” have been cut short.

This a great shame of the American People but it is also a Scourge upon our Nation.

God is very clear concerning the law of consequences, or sowing and reaping, when He states:

“Don’t be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.”  (Galatians 6:7)

Our nation has sewn death while we as a people have gone about our daily lives, immune to the tragic reality that over 3,000 children are being killed each day.  While some of these lives meet their end in despicable operations like Gosnell’s, other children are snuffed out in what some would label “humane and sterile” clinics.  But regardless, the fate is the same – death awaits the innocent child and their God “ordained days” will never come to pass.

There can be no doubt in the quietness of our hearts and conscience that this is an evil deed and that our nation is facing a serious scourge from God Almighty for our nation’s willingness to destroy what He has created.

So the question is, do you and I have our own “3801 Lancaster” in our life that we are willing to walk by and ignore, as another 3,000 children meet an untimely death?  Or will we rise up, engage and seek to expose the unfruitful works of darkness?

Ephesians 5:11-12  “Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.  For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done in secret.”

  1. Mark, thank you for posting this. I’ve followed this case since Gosnell’s initial arrest, and just when I thought I had seen this situation at its worst, I continue to be freshly horrified about the continuous downward spiral we’re on as it relates to morality and a seared conscience. Just today I read that some of Gosnell’s charges, actually many of them, have already been dropped. Even though he could face life on just one or two of the remaining charges if found guilty, what message are we sending our country by dropping charges in a case that had mounds of evidence proving that this man indeed did commit the crimes he was charged with?! Even if you’re pro-choice, you should be horrified and outraged at the conditions of this man’s “house of horrors”, the way he butchered women for years, the way he devalued women on a regular basis, and the way he killed living newborn babies. Anybody who doesn’t have a completely seared conscience should want this man to be help completely responsible for his action and to see justice served. The thing is, he isn’t the only one who has run a “house of horrors”, and he won’t be the last, so what should we do? There are many things, but one is to hold this man completely responsible and send a message to the rest of the evils masquerading as human beings that are doing the same thing, and let them know that they will be exposed, charged, and convicted at every turn. Our government is trying to wash their hands of this travesty while still supporting the abortion agenda, but we need to do our part, speak out, and whatever else it takes to push for laws to be changed to protect women and children in these places. We need to offer women resources in our PRC’s and communities that say more than just “I’m glad you kept your baby. That helps me sleep better at night because I’m pro-life, now go about your business.” There are real reasons why women THINK they need to have an abortion, and we need to make as many resources available as we can to try and address some of those needs. We are annoyed by some of them that have too many babies that cause them to depend on the system, but we condemn them when they abort because they can’t afford them. I know it starts with birth control, staying away from pre-marital sex, and a host of other things, but the reality is, women are getting pregnant and wanting abortions, in and out of marriages (I know because I work at OnlineForLife), and they feel like they have legitimate reasons to kill their babies. We need to do more than talk about it and figure out what God would have us do to address this problem…in real, tangible ways. There’s something to be done at the governmental level, the state (licensing and accountability) level, and in the communities. Check out this link, if you haven’t already, that I read tonight that I thought was good, coming from a Christian perspective. http://liveactionnews.org/bestselling-author-ann-voskamp-rejected-an-abortion-is-pro-the-least-of-these/. I think it’ll go right along with what you said. I’m ready to do more than talk about it, and I’ve been looking more and more lately, at where I can be involved (even beyond what I do at work).

  2. A number of adjectives come to mind: disgusting, sickening, tragic, horrible, insane, wicked, and so on. What’s worse is that millions of Americans support and/or tolerate the taking of innocent human life. Sorrowfully, our nation will never know the blessings that these little lives might have brought to us.
