“Now more than ever before, the people are responsible for the character of their Congress. If that body be ignorant, reckless and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness and corruption. If it be intelligent, brave and pure, it is because the people demand these high qualities to represent them in the national legislature…. If the next centennial does not find us a great nation … it will be because those who represent the enterprise, the culture, and the morality of the nation do not aid in controlling the political forces.” James Garfield, twentieth President of the United States, 1877
For some time now, I have struggled with the questions: Is it too late for America? Has our nation reached the point of no return?
While perhaps no one can answer those questions conclusively, I would contend that America is lost. By lost I mean our once great nation has lost its way morally and spiritually. And because America is lost, our future is bleak… but for a spiritual awakening and revival like we have not seen in many generations.
It would appear that America is on life support at this point.
And if so, then how long will it be before God pulls the plug on this nation which boasts “In God We Trust” as its national motto?
While there are many examples one could highlight as evidence of the above, I would point to just one California law that is taking affect in 2014 to affirm my concern.
I believe the California Transgender Student Rights law epitomizes why we are lost as a nation and why we have perhaps already tumbled over the precipice and simply in a free-fall before our final calamitous collapse. The law consists of just 37 words:
“A pupil shall be permitted to participate in sex-segregated school programs and activities, including athletic teams and competitions, and use facilities consistent with his or her gender identity, irrespective of the gender listed on the pupil’s records.”
Breitbart.com had this to say about the new law: “…students in grades K-12 who identify as transgender will be able to use the school bathrooms of their choosing as long as it is consistent with their gender identity, even if it is different than their gender at birth. Students will also be able to select whether they want to be on the boys team or the girls team based on their gender identity.”
Now stop for just a minute and let the full force of this law sink in and the implications for our children, the future of our nation. The travesty, disgrace and shame of this law is beyond comprehension.
But who is really to blame for this destructive law that will further shed the innocence of our youth who are already under such continuous attack by the enemy?
Greater than the indictment one might make of the legislators and Governor who passed and signed this heinous law, is the indictment of the citizens of California who sat idly by allowing such a morally reprehensible bill to become law.
In 2013 France, hardly a bastion of morality, witnessed hundreds of thousands of demonstrators take to the streets over the country’s new law approving homosexual marriage. Meanwhile, California citizens for the most part remained passive and relatively unresistant to the Transgender Bill. And this is in spite of the fact that the ones who will be most affected by this heinous law will be their young innocent children.
President Garfield had it right when he said: “…if the next centennial does not find us a great nation … it will be because those who represent the enterprise, the culture, and the morality of the nation do not aid in controlling the political forces.”
Americans for several generations, including my own, have ceased to “aid in controlling the political forces” and in so doing we bear the ultimate responsibility for the dire position we find ourselves in today in America.
But while the future is bleak, and even though from a human perspective it would seem as if the forces of evil are triumphing in our nation today, we also know that there is no force that can prevail against a Holy God. We also recognize that when God’s people humbly seek Him in prayer and turn from their transgressions they can be assured of His forgiveness and healing (2 Chronicles 7:14)
Is it too late?
Perhaps for America.
But it’s never too late for you and me to return to God.
